Language in Focus

The aim of this book, for Leaving Certificate Higher Level, is to help students develop the language and thinking skills that are needed in order to become effective users of language.

The primary focus is on Comprehending and Composing, the two areas tested in Paper 1 of the Leaving Certificate English examination.

Language in Focus has a dual purpose:

• To develop the reading skills of students
  The comprehension texts have been chosen with the demands and interests of students in mind. People write best when they are interested in a topic. The wide-ranging content of the texts, written in a variety of styles will appeal to the active and inquisitive minds of students.

• To develop the writing skills of students
  The most important response that students can make to a text is the written one. The texts chosen serve as creative models by which students can develop their own responses.

Part Two of the book is modelled on the Leaving Certificate Examination format. Texts have been organised under themes such as Humour, Food, Violence, Language, etc. The questions that follow will serve as an ideal preparation for the examination.
